Hello Lounge Chair by busk+hertzog

While I love to cover furniture that’s dark and depressing—that makes some comment on the nature of the world at large (“this mortal coil,” as Shakespeare would have it)—it is refreshing to write about products that represent pure, unadulterated joy. When Danish Broadcasting Corporation asked busk+hertzog to design a chair for Kylie Minogue, the Australian pop star and actress, they obviously wanted a piece that would embody her happy, sexy spirit: yes, it’s all pop and circumstance, but still the rainbow-bright aesthetic is as slick and luscious as cherry red lipstick. And that has a decided appeal.

Hello. Designed by busk+hertzog.

Chair Designed for Kylie Minogue

What busk+hertzog came up with in her honor is the Hello Lounge Chair: “its design is round, open and happy—like a mouth calling out to people, asking them to come closer,” says designer Flemming Busk. Like, perhaps, Kylie Minogue’s mouth as it beams out the sexy chanteuse’s ecstatic song? Who can resist “la la la”? (Be honest.) Hello has the exuberance of mid-century classics like the Heart Cone Chair (after Mickey Mouse). With colors like tangerine and violet, magenta and lime, the Heart Lounge Chair only intensifies the analogy to fruit loops. And who can resist candy-colored cereal coated in sugar and delivered by a toucan with a sense of humor?

Nobody. That’s my point. What the cereals of our childhood, Kylie Minogue, and Hello Lounge Chair have in common is dynamism—sheer, ecstatic dynamism. busk+hertzog captured the right spirit in this chair—they even put it on a pedestal (central stainless steel base), so we can all admire it and dream of sitting on it as if it were our very own throne.
