Lunar Lines: Orbis by Galassia

Italian bathroom firm Galassia is revolutionizing the modern sink. In lieu of the standard drain, their Orbis washbasins feature a “macrodrain” in the shape of a circle. The entire Orbis line of ceramic products highlights “the fusion of the primary geometrical figures of the circle and the ellipse.” In the case of the Orbis sinks, the circle shape is itself the macrodrain, which can be easily cleaned since it’s removable. The collection includes wall-hung, semi-recessed, and pedestal basins, all available in white or bronze. The idea behind Orbis is to “bring out the purity of ceramics and the water flowing over it.

Geometrical Sinks with Circular Macrodrain

These circle-within-an-oval sinks were designed by Romano Adolini, who as a child must have played with those shaped block toys that get dropped through their corresponding slots. The raised round and oval washbasins make the most of the geometric design, as they highlight the outer shape sitting exposed and on display atop the counter. The Orbis washbasins in bronze remind me of some of the more decadent sets from the HBO show Rome (sadly, it was over after only one season of sex, blood, and betrayal). Even if your home or hotel room doesn’t typically witness orgiastic parties, the bronze Orbis should remind you of wanton pleasures—with its serpentine arcs and supple curves. In white, the Orbis sinks emphasize their strict adherence to form: the macrodrain resembles a full moon (or a giant sleeping pill—either will prepare you for a night of restful slumber).
