At Maison et Objet 2011: The Losanges Rug by the Bouroullecs and Nanimarquina

“We have always been captivated by the traditional Persian rug, especially by the very old kilim savoir-faire which we see as a delicate mix of rusticity and fineness,” says Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, the design duo behind the latest rug that is anything but traditional. It goes by the name Losanges, and like a royal bloodline of sorts, the bright-eyed rug is destined for success since its Bouroullec design was done in collaboration with the Spanish company, Nanimarquina – a name known for award-winning sustainable designs of all things tactile.

The Bouroullec brothers’ reputation in the field makes us believe that by simply touching a new design, they turn it into gold. Although the rug has yet to be introduced to the design world, pending its release in just over one week, the Losanges will likely be crowned into the rug world during its 2011 Maison et Objet debut in Paris.

“We have been lucky to see this project carried through by the craftsmen of Northern Pakistan who managed to skillfully combine thirteen colors through the geometrical rhombus shape,” the designers recall of its process. We can appreciate how they call attention to the men and women who have worked hard to make it possible. Responsible, respectful designers are not always easy to spot. But they go on, making them seem that much more down-to-earth. They continue to reflect on the rug as if it has come to life by itself without demanding unnecessary credit. “As well as being crafted by hand, the Afghan wool is also spun by hand, which allows for some unique color tones to be highlighted. This subtly random technique makes each lozenge slightly different and each rug, a unique piece.”
