Rock Out in a Lullaby Chair by Sand & Birch

Lullaby

is a chair that was released in the spring of 2010 by Sand & Birch studio. It’s a chair with the burning desire to be seen. There’s no doubt the dramatic, wide base of the chair and it’s high gloss appeal are two of many characteristics that set this black beauty apart from your ordinary chair… or lullaby for that matter.

The seat was designed by Andrea Fino and Samanta Snidaro and released this spring for the annual Salone Internazionale del Mobile show in Milan in addition to their HT Lux Elleme wine cellar that came out shortly afterward. Lullaby is said to be a “tribute to movie sets and suggestions belonging to our collective imagination,” finishing with the idea that “the musical quote in its name is perfect for describing the energy concept of its shape”. Although my thoughts on the genre of music it speaks to may not be exactly in line with a lullaby, I almost appreciate the chair more for taking on a dark profile while being titled “Lullaby”.

Designers Andrea Fino and Samanta Snidaro provide for yet another interesting combination of ideas. They founded Sand & Birch back in 2003 and have dedicated their work to the contract furniture field saying, that they favor “small, limited or very limited productions that permit to test, customize and create unique items and quality, characterized by the values of the ‘slow luxury’.” Their entire collection capitalizes on Fino’s lawful instincts – as an employee in the communications field of a Government Institution – while allowing some of Snidaro’s uncompromising architectural background to fuel the fire.

The Lullaby itself is made from a varnished, hard polyurethane and has a minimalist shape. It’s smooth edges would be safe for a house with young children except that the slide-shaped legs may exacerbate climbing up and shimmying down in either direction.

Perhaps that’s what Lullaby really plays on: the ability to tire out kids and adults alike. I guess you’ll only know if you try!
