Bursting with Light: Gira Sole by Beghelli LUCE

With a factory located just a hop, skip, and a jump from Miami (in Miramar, Florida), Beghelli LUCE can rightly advertise that their products (some of them anyway) are manufactured in the United States. This includes their energy-saving ingrade luminaire with the beautifully florid name Gira Sole (sunflower). This high-performance light engine "is up to five times more efficient than conventional lamps and capable of retaining up to 70% of its initial light output with an estimated life of 50,000 hours." In other words, it's got power.

And it looks the part. The chunky, industrial light is constructed from machined aluminum alloy with an anodized finish available in black, clear, and green; and a hard anodized finish available in black, titanium, and custom colors. Outside of the ground, Gira Sole is an industrial dream: it resembles clockworks. It is, however, meant to be sunk. The recessed application makes the light ideal for "landscape applications, walkways, wall wash, and retail." Despite its good looks above ground, Gira Sole should be entombed in its Direct Burial Housing (DBH) of durable thermoplastic. What left visible is what gives this LED luminaire its name-a round lens surrounded by radiating lines of various lengths (there are even smaller discs inside the circle that recall a sunflower's dark seeds). Gira Sole is "available with white, RGB color mixing or custom color LED light engines...in standard color temperatures (warm), (daylight), or (cool)." Or choose single-color LEDs in red, red/orange, amber, green, cyan, blue, or royal blue. Gira Sole combines the natural and the manmade: it's flower and gear-a metal blossom, a robot's Valentine.
