Factory Friday: The KH Chair by Martin Konrad Gloeckle

This week at StyleFactory the KH chair has debuted and is ready for your vote. Modern and simply fashioned with a stitched brown leather, designer Martin Konrad Gloeckle played with a cantilevered seat. By not attaching the back of the seat to the frame, the entire chair goes from normal to extraordinary. In fact, the angles of his brushed aluminum frame are powerful by themselves, like the slide of a trombone playing a beautiful, bellowing tune.

Set low to the ground, the KH chair goes for a minimalist design, but doesn’t stop there – it’s easily taken apart and made into a portable seat that can be taken anywhere you want to go. For the studio apartment or less traveled, this factor becomes useful for storage since the chair is able to break down and requires virtually no space.

Although the chair is new to the design world, its designer, Gloeckle knows his stuff. He created this piece after studying at both Pratt Institute and the Denmark School of Design. He’s also designed numerous pieces – from bookshelves and lighting to clocks fruit – many of which you can see right on the StyleFactory site as well. Originally of Germany, Gloeckle carries a pencil nearly everywhere he goes. It’s a “just in case” sort of mentality, since a magical new idea may pop into his mind at any given moment. Especially when he’s riding the subway or even on his bike, which he is said to be doing most days, no matter where he is. Since his career in design (and thus his travels) take him all over the world, his continuous change of scenery is a great way to stir up new thoughts and challenge him to see the world through a new lens each day.

After seeing the KH chair, it seems anyone who does traveling themselves – that’s for the soccer moms, the camping in the woods, the fish houses… they all count! – will also see design through a new light. Perpetuate the cycle of creativity honed through movement and seek that same natural inspiration by taking the motto of this sweet lounge chair along for the ride as a gentle reminder.
