PROJECTiONE’S myLight is a DIY Dream

If you were to receive a non-descript, rectangular, roughly 18" x 8" white cardboard box in the mail, what would you guess was inside? A collection of Godiva chocolates? A notification of changes to your Visa account? A concise summary of the new health insurance law? How about a "DIY Luminaire"?-its component parts neatly flat-packed and eagerly awaiting your assembly? Amid the mounds of paper junk we receive via U.S. post every day, this would be a fortuitous outcome indeed.

myLight. Designed by PROJECTiONE.

And PROJECTiONE, for one, is betting you'll like the idea. The contents of the myLight package include a 15' UL listed cable and socket assembly, polystyrene hardware and cable tie, and 286 laser-cut Mylar components.

Without even seeing the finished product, I can tell you I'm in love with myLight. The compact packaging with its array of canine-shaped niches fulfills my craving for compartments, my obsession with organization. And the methodical means of assembly looks to be a Zen exercise in calming the stormy mind... sort of a productive meditation for the A&D set. PROJECTiONE'S helpful video makes assembly a breeze: It's really just a matter of sliding the socket assembly onto the end of the cable, attaching the wire ends to the terminals (don't worry, no live electricity yet), then connecting the 286 Mylar pieces together via a simple system of slots and tabs. All this requires but a Phillips screwdriver, a pair of pliers or tweezers, a Type A bulb, and a little bit of patience.

PROJECTiONE’S myLight is a DIY Dream

The pay-off for My Light's exercise in self-assembly is a beautiful blossoming bouquet of light. My Light has high textural and organic appeal. PROJECTiONE refers to this first of several forthcoming myLight shapes as "Teardrop," but It could pass for several of my favorite shapes from nature: the infinite violet-rose of the artichoke heart, the faceted fantasy of a rough-cut diamond, the enviable opulence of a Faberg© egg. Admittedly, that last one doesn't emerge from nature precisely. But if you need an extra incentive for the appeal of My Light, just listen to PROJECTiONE: "The visual complexity of the laser cut system adds to myLight's beauty while the simple method and repetition of assembly makes it easy and fun to build. We hope the process can be a shared experience for multiple users gathered around a single myLight."
