First off, when did clothing manufacturers start teaming up with lighting manufacturers to make lamps? Diesel has built its reputation as a clothing brand - and more specifically as a maker of jeans. But last year during Salone, (the International Furniture Fair in Milan) the brand welcomed its new collections: furniture with Moroso, lighting with Foscarini and the second Home textile collection by Zucchi - all designed by Diesel’s Creative Team headed by Creative Director Wilbert Das. These excursions into new fields of design, which include Fork for Foscarini, are a part of Diesel’s “Successful Living”.

Fork was inspired by the “casual world of the campsite and campers.” It consists of an anodised metal base with flexible joints which allow the head (or diffuser) to be adjusted, angled and rotated 360 degrees to provide directional light or directed upwards for general ambient light. Fork’s canvas shade has deliberately visible stitching (recalling the roots of Diesel style - ie. a pair of jeans) - and deliberately visible fabric layers. The texture and patchwork structure, when illuminated, is reminiscent of a canvas tent lit from inside. With either a rope or grey shade (or diffuser), Fork emits soft light - for a warm, luminous effect. The dark metal structure of the base is joined to the diffuser by two metal rings (like you might see on a tarp or other outdoorsy equipment), which allow complete rotation around the axis of the bulb. Fork is available in floor and table versions.
Few established fashion brands seem content to remain within their own realm of design. Take Ralph Lauren, Bottega Veneta and Armani, for instance, who have all ventured into the world of home furnishings and decor. So Diesel’s foray shouldn’t be all-too surprising. Fortunately, the brand has stayed true to its laid back look and informal aesthetic. Fork is dynamic, playful and casual - befitting the brand and its roots.
