Flaminia’s IO Collection: An Exercise in Composition

The IO collection from Italian company Flaminia is a composition of forms: a rectangular base supports an oval form that intersects with a rectangular slab.  “The encounter between rational geometry and minimal shapes created IO,” explains the company. While Kohler’s Parity bathtub brings functionality to the forefront, Flaminia’s IO collection addresses aesthetics first and foremost.

IO. Designed by Alexander Duringer and Stefano Rosini for Flaminia.

The new bathroom concept, designed by Alexander Duringer and Stefano Rosini “interprets the fusion of forms and sensations…”  With its minimal shapes and elegant lines, IO is designed to be sculptural and artistic.  The rectangular slab, however, takes on a functional purpose, serving as a shelf that wraps around the perimeter of the bathtub.  Like Kohler’s Parity, it too provides a handy resting spot for your glass of wine (or cup of tea) as you soak.  Available in two different materials, wood or lacquer, and in a variety of colors, the aesthetic can be transformed from subtle and classic to bold and contemporary.   While the oval bathtub remains white, the shelf can range from classic dark and light oak, zebrano or polished lacquer in any number of custom colors.

The bathtub is available either as a free-standing or built-in structure.  The built-in option eliminates the base and sheaths the tub in a rectangular box.  This box-like form then provides the “shelf” that defines the free-standing IO tub.  IO bathroom collection also includes a three bathroom vanity basins in different sizes, a bathtub, also wall hung toilet and bidet. Both the washbasins and the bathtub are presented with a large range of structures purposely studied to wrap and support the ceramic – as done with the ‘rectangular slab’ or ‘shelf’ component of the bathtub.  SI is Flaminia’s corresponding series of taps that “through the simple shape of a ribbon, interpret a water fall, synthesizing its harmony and natural flow.”
