It’s true that ‘Made in New York’ doesn’t have the same ring to it as ‘Made in Italy.” But maybe it should. For woodworking in particular, I have more confidence with the longevity of many Brooklyn-made products than with brand-name Italian designs (though I’d still go to the Italians for my sofa, among other things). Take Bklyn Designs for example: from Wüd Furniture Design to Benton Custom, beautifully crafted pieces of solid wood abound. Meir Design/Green Solutions Enterprises is further supporting my opinion with their sustainable kitchen systems, bar furniture and other pieces: all handmade in the New York studio.

Green Solutions Enterprises believes in new ways of making sustainable furniture with sensible applications and purpose.”  Their pieces are built to solve common space problems and include custom built units and modular systems for the kitchen, dining and entertainment rooms.  The integration of digital, audio and lighting components are available options for these systems. Take their 2010 Limited Edition Loft Wine Bar Table (Dimensions: 36.5″H x 63.5″W x 44″; tabletop 1.5″D), designed to house your glassware and wine bottles.  All custom-made, it features walnut-framed tint glass doors, LED lighting and translucent plexi-glass panels.  Individual niches for wine bottles, made from reused steel tubing (in black), create a grid, surfaced with a powder-coated steel panel.

High-rise Bar and Extension Table combines cabinetry with two table extensions on each side of the table, with handmade teak sliders and hand carved grooves. (Dimensions: closed 44″H x 75″W x 50″D; open 44″H x 117″D x 38 – 50″D).  Nine cabinet units (front and back) each consist of a birch plywood box and walnut framed glass doors with soft-close hinges.  The tabletop is shown in walnut as are the side and edge details.  LED lit interior plexi-glass panels provide a contemporary twist to the piece.
