The Alluring Arithmetic of Rimadesio’s Abacus Closet Systems

In response to “We’re getting married. Should we get you a diamond?” famed sex writer and HBO fashion icon Carrie Bradshaw says, “No. No. Just get me a really big closet.” From Sex and the City to the suburbs, closets are receiving increasing amounts of attention. It doesn’t hurt that prestigious Italian design firms all seem to be doing them, and Rimadesio is no exception. After “Zenit” and “Dress,” and again designed by Guiseppe Bacuso, “Abacus” is a walk-in wardrobe designed as a composition of wall panels and horizontal elements.

Using the most exclusive material in their collection, Ecolorsystem, lacquered glass available in thirty colors, “Abacus looks like a wall of pure painted glass.” Originally renowned for their doors and sliding panels, Abacus marks a part of Rimadesio’s expansion into shelving and wall-systems. On the Italian design front: Poliform has been in the closet business all along and B&B Italia, renowned for its contemporary furniture, introduced the closet-system Pier in 2007 and Flat.C, a wall-system in 2008. Rimadesio’s Abacus takes advantage of the company’s background and expertise in glass and panel elements. Abacus is made of a hidden aluminum structure, with either self-supporting elements or suspended elements hung with a system of patented fixtures. In addition to the back panels of lacquered glass, the self-supported and suspended storage units are built of the same material, creating a sophisticated and sleek aesthetic. The clean, modern and monotone aesthetic serves as the perfect backdrop to a clothing and accessories collection, allowing the pieces to stand out and making them increasingly accessible. The Slimline shelves are made of honeycomb aluminum, a sturdy yet lightweight material borrowed from the aeronautics industry that allows for a very slight frontal visual impact. An LED lighting system, integrated into the top part of the panels, provides illumination for the closet and its contents.

Despite the possible thirty color variations of lacquered glass and at risk of seeming boring, the white is perfect. Providing a blank slate for your belongings in a museum-like aesthetic, its elegance deems it worthy of showcasing anything from Louboutin’s and Manolo’s to tailored men’s suits. It may in fact make you weed through your belongings to keep only those deserving of the space. But if you’re not willing to pare down, fortunately storage compartments are available for discreet concealment.
