At #NeoCon09: ecoTrazzo Shines, Sustainably

The clearly named Terrazzo and Marble Supply Companies, a stone’s throw away from Chicago in Wheeling, IL, is emphasizing the sustainable side of terrazzo. ecoTrazzo is “more environmentally friendly than ever” with recycled glass and recycled concrete chips. Recently, the company’s terrazzo has graced the well-traveled floors of Miami International Airport and DC’s Verizon Arena.

The durable material will last forty years, making its cost more than reasonable. After those four decades, ecoTrazzo can be resurfaced, restoring the brilliance of the glass chips and the smoothness of the surface. The sustainable part of Terrazzo and Marble Supply Companies’ flooring is reason enough to like it, but I fell in love with terrazzo in my childhood. Growing up in Miami, I felt the coolness of terrazzo in both my grandmothers’ homes. The material was extremely popular in the tropical city—you can see it on display in downtown highrises, South Beach hotels, and Florida bungalows. I’m happy to see it in the serpentine stairways of Chicago’s Merchandise Mart as well.
