At #NeoCon09: Bucky and the Vitra Experience

In a prime and prominent location at #NeoCon09, in the South Lobby of the Merchandise Mart, Vitra has created the ultimate lounge. Buckminster Fuller original Fly’s Eye dome (courtesy of Max Protech) serves as both a focal point and a backdrop for designs by Arik Levy, Ronan + Erwan Boroullec, Jasper Morrison, Antonio Citterio, Charles Eames & Eero Saarinen.

The newest system from Vitra – WorKit by Arik Levy – is being debuted along with new AC4 and Skape seating by Antonio Citterio. “It is a fitting and harmonious installation that is a nod as to how we use our very own Buckminster dome for exhibitions at the Vitra Campus in Weil Am Rhein, Germany” according to Andrew Floyd, senior project manager of Vitra.

Since the weekend and prior to the start of #NeoCon09, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s Icove Highback Sofas (2006) have been filled with exhibitors and attendees with laptops in hand. Not surprising since their wide side and back panels provide much needed privacy, creating secluded spaces to unwind, decompress and focus. “It creates a peaceful oasis – especially in spacious living areas,” according to Vitra.

WorKit, debuting here at #NeoCon09, was designed as a kit: “A simple, logical and extremely flexible solution conveying a subtle impression for communicative office areas,” according to Vitra. Requiring a mere 6 minutes to create a basic setup, “WorKit can be spontaneously reconfigured and adapted to new demands caused by expansion, reduction or remodeling.” Adjustable screens can allow for either communication or concentration (however limited, considering the general layout.)  Nice design, though it does seem to perpetuate a rather unpleasant, assembly-line work environment.

The placement of Bucky’s Dome for both Art Chicago and #NeoCon09 works in collaboration with the exhibition at MCA Chicago: “Buckminster Fuller: Starting With the Universe,” previously at the Whitney.
