Dueling Desks: Novanta Workstation Challenges MILK

A new desk built for Mac users is out to dethrone MILK! Meet the Novanta Workstation which also intends to streamline your messy workspace—this time with a few additional perks. Novanta, like MILK, has the built-in electrical equipment drawer to hide unsightly (not to mention tangled) cords. It has the MILK’s clean desktop too. But designer Luke Riggall has added some extra features: speakers, USB and audio hub, monitor stand, iPod dock, and power strip.

Nice utensil drawers too (though not as cleverly designed as MILK’s colorful, translucent, drop-in ones). Novanta also features a laptop/A3 paper drawer. It doesn’t have MILK’s optional fish tank, however. Instead, it offers an illuminated tabletop (AKA built-in lightbox). This is the hipster battle for Mac control—perhaps the greatest match-up in 3rings history (at least in the office department)!

The preference for MILK or Novanta will probably come down to design. While MILK features a central pillar that holds the desk, Novanta relies on the more classical pair of desk supports. A bit chunkier than MILK, Novanta does mimic computer chip design, with its grid-like boxiness and cube-decorated speakers—something that might win over true technophiles (old-school geeks, let’s say). MDF and aluminum construction lend Novanta an air of industrial chic that, coupled with its silhouette, recall Steelcase’s older models. Either way, Riggall has definitely upped the ante on Mac-inspired functionality and style. His Novanta Workstation seems to be challenging MILK to a duel. I can’t say who will win, but both desks are testament to futurity—how technology can assuage both practical and aesthetic desires.
