Atlas

Today we launch 3rings, a professional product blog to help inspire designers searching for awesome, hip, fun products. As one of the founders of Designer Pages, I love the concept of social media and user-generated content. While I know mass collaboration and collective intelligence is extraordinarily valuable, I also know that sometimes you just want someone to deliver the awesomeness for you.

Atlas, from the Mythology Collection. Materials: ash, glass. Designed by Peter Loh.

On that note, I want to draw attention to Atlas by Peter Loh, a product that has truly earned a place in my heart and the hearts of all the Designer Pages workers… what can I say other than we’re a sentimental bunch. So imagine our delight when finding this side-table at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City (May '07).

“Atlas is a sturdy table that evokes the image of the mythic Titan holding up the world. It is constructed from stained ash and features a tempered grey glass top inset into the frame. Suitable for use individually or combine multiple Atlas tables for use as a coffee table.”

This statue of Atlas is located at Rockefeller Center in New York City, just across the street from St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

We often turn to Atlas at Rockefeller Center for encouragement and motivation. If anyone has ever read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand (or if you’re reading this blog, you’re probably also familiar with the Fountainhead), the imagery and message behind this coffee table should be crystal clear. This is a table that speaks to the phrase ‘mind before body.’ Sip your coffee in the morning with your legs up on your coffee table and remember that you can change the world everyday if you want to.

The Atlas table is worthy of holding anything that means the world to you.
