Architectural Profile: Solstice on the Park by Studio Gang

Solstice on the Park is the first building by Studio Gang to focus on solar carving. The resulting design provides a patchwork texture with a multi-dimensional sculptural quality.

The six-story residential tower in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood uses the sun for environmental advantages. Studio Gang explains: “The design cuts into the building’s facade in response to the sun and orients surfaces to the optimum 72-degree angle for Chicago’s latitude, maximizing sunlight in winter for passive solar warming and minimizing light and heat gain during summer to reduce air-conditioning usage.”

Solstice on the Park features what we might call millennial cubism, since the myriad squares not only fragment the building but also carve futuristic angles into its face.

Besides the 250 dwellings, Solstice on the Park features a green roof. The glass structure offers expansive views of Jackson Park to the south and the Chicago skyline to the north.
