Milan 2014: Bouroullec Knit Upholstery Collection for Kvadrat

Canal, Gravel and Moraine are three new upholstery fabrics that were launched by Danish brand Kvadrat at last week’s Salone del Mobile.

The Bouroullec Brothers’ Knit upholstery collection for Kvadrat consists of three tactile designs.

Constructed using a double jersey knit, the three fabric offer multi-directional stretchability and comfort. The knitted front layer of the textiles is made from fine melange wool and polyester yarns, which combines dark and light fibres. This ensures that they have a sensuous touch and feature a rich play of warm, delicate and irregular color nuances. The knitted back layer is made from unicoloured polyester yarns, in accent colours. These provide firmness and structure, as well as an eye-catching contrast with the wool.

To produce the patterns of the textiles, thick polyester threads are inserted between the two knitted layers, which are interlocked by knitting the back to the front layer. As a result of this construction, all the designs reveal elements of their internal structure on their surfaces.

Canal features a geometric pattern of slightly disorganised rectangles, with the lines that form the shapes in a highlight colour. Bold, yet subtle, it has a more pronounced relief than Gravel and Moraine.

Gravel has an abstract pattern of slightly uneven rows of tiny dots, which are in a contrast colour. Between these rows the textile is ribbed.

The pattern of Moraine comprises differently sized dots and shapes, in a highlight colour, which sit in the surface of the fabric.

The collection is made up of subtle tones combined with a grey and cream with highlight shades like rich red and azure blue.
