Modern, Modular, & Green: Queen Mary Bar by Seed Furniture

Inspired by the bar in the captain's room aboard the first Queen Mary luxury cruiser built in 1936, Queen Mary Bar by Seed Furniture is "a classic piece with unexpected options." Like its namesake, Queen Mary Bar features holes on top, which were once used to keep bottles upright in turbulent seas. Unlike the maritime source of its inspiration, however, Queen Mary Bar includes some rather unique details, such as a patented modular design.

Clean Lines and Repurposed Wood

Reeve Schley is the man behind Seed Furniture, a woodworking studio based in downtown Los Angeles and the farmlands of New Jersey (where Schley grew up amidst the bucolic fields of a 400-acre farm). Many of his pieces use an ingenious dovetail sliding system that allows stacking. Queen Mary Bar has the option of modularity: "The base of the piece can easily start its life in a home as a changing table, transition to a bureau and even an armoire before finding its blissful state as an evocative bar." In short, Queen Mary Bar can shift "from diapers to Dewars."

Measuring 40 5/8" wide x 20" deep x 32" high, Queen Mary Bar is a versatile piece that fits spaces large and small. Its antique mirror, reclaimed wood, and period details give it an archaic vibe, while its clean lines, tapered legs, and crisp geometry make it decidedly modern. Personally, I love the circular holes of Queen Mary Bar, partly because I like to imagine all the items they might accommodate-everything from ink pots to wine bottles, paint brushes to giant spools of thread.
