“Artemide is going through a very positive time.” Ernesto Gismondi, founder and head of the lighting manufacturer says. As reported in their press release that focuses on their eco-friendly, high design advancements, the company closed 2011 with a growing turnover everywhere, including their own Italian market. “I haven’t seen as much innovative energy for many years,” he continues, which is in a large part due to advancements they’ve made using energy-efficient LED lighting created with foldable lampshades by the Japanese fashion designer (and my personal favorite perfume maker), Issey Miyake.

The collection of different lamps in the IN-EI line up follow the Junichiro Tanizaki saying that goes something like “beauty is not the object, but the interaction between light and shadow created by the object” (as translated from Italian).

Translated from the words ‘shadow’, ‘shade’, or ‘nuance’ in Japanese, Miyake and Artemide’s IN-EI project follows suit, looking like a seashell or taking on a geometric shape in folded form but pulling out into a shadowless paper lantern of sorts when fully extended.

Each of the nine lamps in the series are made from recycled PET bottles that are processed using technology that reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions up to 80% compared to new construction. Thanks to their movement for more sustainable lighting, Artemide creatively takes sustainability in illumination beyond the energy-efficient bulbs and plugs it straight into the shades and structures themselves, with the help of Miyake’s style expertise.
