For geography buffs, the details of a globe are mesmerizing. For soccer or baseball enthusiasts, the same feeling is transferred on an autographed ball from their favorite team. Round objects ignite our senses since their rotation allows us to see every angle. That’s why, in the case of the Woolball woven sphere light by ilanel Design Studio, design aficionados drool at its well-spun sight.

Custom, or made-to-order Woolball lights, are woven with attention to direction for a slight differentiation from one segment to the next. Their bold presence comes from their large size, as well as the way in which light flows through the miniscule spaces between the threads. Australia-based designer Ilan.el is the creator of these ceiling hung lamps – who has created everything from architectural wonders to lighting and whimsical spaces – and his ilanel Studio is such where all of the above come together.

Place the large lamp sculptures over a dining table or in a living room for a look brimming with an opulence that is richly independent of chandeliers or pendant lights. With Ilan.el’s successful background and education in architecture and the design field, he makes each Woolball as a hanging pendant light that will stand out from the rest in scale and material usage. Using strong wool wrapped taut around its frame in various directions on the panels, the shade diffuses the light and makes intriguing shadows.

With a passion for art and design that runs very deep, Ilan.el creates pieces that “extend beyond the physicality of mere objects” and into the space where grabbing the light fixture for a thorough 360 degree view seems absolutely necessary.

About the Designer: At ilanel Design Studio, the down under-based designer follows his own philosophy “that encompasses spatial relationships and the creation of touch points between people, artifacts and their evolving environments”.
