New Take on New England Classic: Atlantic Lowback Chair by O&G Studio

How many readers remember the scene in When Harry Met Sally in which Carrie Fisher’s character wants to throw out her boyfriend’s wagon wheel coffee table once the two move in together? A similar scene played out in my friend’s Miami apartment when she wanted to eject her husband’s Windsor chair. If I had known about the Atlantic Lowback Chair by O&G Studio, I could have saved them some marital strife. A contemporary version of the New England classic, the Atlantic Lowback Chair is a Windsor with new proportions and unexpected colors.

Available in Noir (black), Brittany Blue (navy), Anchor Blue (aqua), persimmon (orange), Turmeric (yellow) and Peledum (gray), the Atlantic Lowback Chair retains the signature slats of the Windsor, as well as the seat shape and legs. Where it differs, it differs interestingly. The Atlantic has a much lower back at approximately 27 inches and a more compact footprint: the seat width measures 20 inches with a depth of 17 inches. The idea behind the Atlantic Lowback Chair is to offer a tribute to the classics without resorting to creating reproductions.

O&G Studio makes all of its furniture in Rhode Island, created by New England craftsmen. The company was started by jeweler Jonathan Glatt and Sara Ossana, a theatrical set designer and architect. Their backgrounds show in their furniture: “All O&G designs exhibit the quality and attention to detail one would expect from a jeweler, the whimsy and eclecticism of a set designer, as well as the shared vision and style Sara and Jonathan have honed in their respective design fields.” The Atlantic Lowback Chair illustrates O&G Studio’s unique aesthetic with its arresting proportions and jewel-like colors.

About the Manufacturer: The idea for O&G Studio began when jewelry designer Jonathan Glatt and interior architect and theatrical set designer Sara Ossana met at a welding for furniture class at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003. Years later, the two decided to return to their passion for furniture and thus created the company. Based in Warren, Rhode Island, O&G Studio produces a line of sustainable, American-made furnishings and accessories crafted by local New England craftsmen.
