At ICFF: The Ulah Rocker by Mut Design for Expormim

The Ulah was exhibited at ICFF last week like an eye-catching lily pad. Its shape and interesting angles provoked me to think longer after initially identifying it as a side table or footrest. As I drew nearer, I noticed the heavy rope wrapped tightly around the small structure in such a way that it suddenly made sense: This was a low-set rocker.

Made of a polyester rope, the Ulah by Mut Design for Expormim is strong enough to withstand our body weight and the great outdoors. Designed to be taken out by the pool deck or garden patio or to remain inside as a single unit or multiple units stacked together, the Ulah transforms fluidly.

Bringing in a clear Spanish influence from Mut Design for the Spanish manufacturer, Expormim, they say that “the Ulah development is based on the clash of ideas to bring together the craft and the art”. Although it is not built on a sleigh bottom like a traditional rocking chair, the Ulah utilizes the round nature of it’s base while holding its occupant in the slightly folded center.
