Walkover Lighting by Roberto Paoli for Serralunga

Let me take you back, if you can remember it, to 1984, when a young Michael Jackson still looked (mostly) like Michael Jackson, and he spoke his response to a paternity suit with an imaginative music video in which his white wing tips literally lighted the way to his exoneration, a pink dreamscape of Gotham stretched out behind him. The conceit of the illuminated paving stones (and stairs, lamppost, and bed—all of which light up in the video whenever Jackson contacts them) has been captured and co-opted to excellent effect by avant-garde manufacturer Serralunga and designer Roberto Paoli: their Walkover Lighting gives you the power to customize a garden path of illuminating incandescence.

Lighting Modules Resemble Authentic Garden Stones

Indeed, Paoli was reportedly inspired by the Jackson video, as he dreamed up a way for you to dot your landscape with light. The product consists of modules of five, wired together and ready for linkage with like groupings as you wend your way around your house and back. Walkover Lighting is quite portable: the individual “stones” (and the groupings of five for that matter) are very light and thus easy to “install” across your yard, or around your flowerbed, or just leading off into the distance a la Billie Jean.

If you’d like to re-live the glory days of “Jacko Steps,” drop by the Serralunga showroom during Milan Design Week, April 12-17.

About the Manufacturer: Italy’s Serralunga dates all the way back to their 1825 founding in Biella. One might think that a company fast approaching their third century of existence would have picked up some conservative tendencies along the way. Not so with Serralunga, who, true to their motto of “living different,” is constantly on the lookout for innovative designs that can be manufactured on a large scale. To that end, their portfolio includes collaboration with cutting-edge designers like Marc Sadler, Ron Arad, and Arik Levy. Of special note among their product offerings is the “Forniture” series of light-integrated furnishings, like Levy’s Meteor Light and Lina Obregón’s Palenquera Light.
