Sledgehammer No More: Green Zip Adjustable Drywall Tape

Here’s a smart little invention to ponder; easily removable drywall tape. For those who are not familiar with the nuts and bolts of construction, drywall tape is used to seam two pieces of gypsum board together when constructing a wall. Gypsum board comes in 4’x8′ sheets, which have to be joined together with tape and joint compound to create a seamless wall. The issue with such a wall is the mess that comes when adjustments have to be made, and given our fast-paced culture, adjustments are made often.

Green-Zip.

Green-Zip is a drywall joint tape that allows for quick reconfiguration depending on a building’s changing needs. The tape is installed over a drywall joint with a 3″ pull-tail that can be covered by the adjacent flooring and trim. When the inevitable need for a change comes, the tape can be “unzipped” to expose the screws that anchor the drywall to the studs. The drywall can then be unscrewed and reused, eliminating noisy demolition and unhealthy air-born dust. Green-Zip also eases repairs, allowing the wall to be easily opened for running new wiring or checking for water damage.

Compared to normal drywall, Green-Zip partition construction cost runs about the equal with an added government incentive of typically $3-$14 a square foot. Green-Zip also saves on the cost of new drywall and overtime construction work normally associated with demolition in occupied spaces. This is a logical invention I’m glad to see on the market. Especially since it can provide up to 3 LEED credits.
