A TUOHY Classic: The Atheneum Collection

Let me transport you back to the Eastern Seaboard of 1920. Prohibition had just taken effect, Atlantic City was in its full, lascivious, boardwalk-strolling splendor. And-if you believe the gorgeous mise-en-scene of the new series Boardwalk Empire-laden with architecturally-intriguing storefronts, art deco hotels, and classically-outfitted interiors befitting a certain gangster class of hoi polloi. Looking at David Allen Peso's Atheneum Collection for Tuohy, I'm reminded of the show's anti-hero Nucky Thompson, because-sitting behind any of Peso's modular offerings for Atheneum-he would certainly look the part of the Kingpin of America's Playground.

High-End Classical Casegoods Fit for Executive Offices & More

The aspiration for Atheneum is to integrate the best of high-end, classical design for office casegoods-this means supreme hardwoods, artisan craftsmanship, and exquisite detailing-into a modular scheme that allows mixing and matching: "All of the flexibility and interchangeability familiar to the contemporary furniture realm is now incorporated into this finely crafted collection, without loss to the classical integrity." The series is comprised of desks, hutches, low and tower storage units, and bookcases. Options include storage fronts in wood or glass; varying tower heights; decorative flourishes like toeboard and top detailing or frieze moulding; hardware in low lustre brass, satin black, or brushed nickel; and a huge selection of primary wood in your choice of stain (see here for details).

Tuohy's intention for Atheneum is none other than making the superior craftsmanship and iconic look of classic hardwood casegoods available to a broad market-without the usual constraints like expense and lack of portability. From the looks of Atheneum, they've achieved this auspicious objective: "a totally coordinated program for furniture, whose individual elements are elegant in their own right, and uncommonly effective when working together as a solution for interior plans."
