At Salone: MissoniHome’s Cactus Garden + Erbario

Legendary zigzags, waves, and stripes; Missoni is somewhat of a household name, renowned for its bold geometric patterns. Though MissoniHome is a fairly recent addition to the brand, its use of color and pattern draws immediately recognition. Later this month, at the all-important Salone in Milan, Missoni Home will launch two new collections: Cactus Garden and Erbario. Despite an atmosphere of solemnity and uncertainty due to the state of our economy, Missoni’s bright colors and cheerful patterns introduce much needed optimism to the incoming spring season.

MissoniHome’s collections are meant to evoke “Nature’s travel sensations, memories, surreal mirages, rendered in hyperrealistic portraits on fabrics and furnishings,” according to the company. Cactus Garden includes chaise longues with multicolor corded seats, footstools, floor cushions and rugs. Erbario consists of a lounger in floral cotton satin, floor and square cushions, a floral rug and pouffes. The collections focus on relaxation, comfort and optimism, creating a casual seating environment. Versatile for use both indoors and outdoors, the collections can either bring the outdoors in or bring the indoors out.

The pieces themselves are not formally innovative, but the colors and patterns a welcome addition to the furniture world and representative of the Missoni name. MissoniHome, like Cristian Zuzunaga, Wallpaper Magazine’s “Prints Charming” with his Pixel Couch, is focused on color and pattern as opposed to form. This focus is not surprising, given that Missoni’s clothing collection grew out of this methodology. The simple forms of Cactus Garden and Erbario beg to be grouped in arrangements that become patterns in themselves. Beside a pool, within a garden or on your lawn, Missoni introduces much needed color for the springtime and summer ahead. With the exception of the all to kitschy floral shaped rugs from the Cactus Garden Collection, the new collections are worthy of a closer look.
