If you're a fan of Wallpaper Magazine, then you're probably familiar with Domus Design Collection (DDC). In June 2008, they featured a story about the DDC showroom in LA, which was originally designed by Charles and Ray Eames, based on their Case Study House #8 in Pacific Palisades. There is no question that the LA showroom is a major gem. But DDC's west coast has a rival on the east: the company's NY showroom was designed by none other than Philip Johnson. At either location, you’ll find the newest member of the Cube Collection, the Cube Motorized TV Cabinet.

Some years ago, I was asked to write an article about maintaining a healthy marriage (never mind that I wasn't married at the time or particularly eager to offer relationship advice). It was a paying job, so I pretended some measure of expertise. One of my fine recommendations was to "Keep the TV OUT of the Bedroom." If I had known about the Cube Motorized TV Cabinet, I might have offered that instead. The design is as sleek and elegant as all of DDC's offerings, featuring clean lines, grooved "handles," and uninterrupted surfaces. The Cube stands as a sort of crest for DDC, whose website offers this quotation from Leonardo DaVinci: "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

That a television could be hidden inside the cabinet does not seem possible when it's closed. But hidden inside are some clever hinges and a mechanized shelf that lifts the television into view like some futuristic communications screen. Which means that your bedroom can be a sanctuary after all-whether it's from Gossip Girl or any of the many incarnations of Law and Order. Tuck the TV away and the cabinet converts into a repository of calm-just a gleaming smooth expanse. Romance awaits!
